School Year Routines

The word routine may make you think of something boring, but in reality, routines can give you the structure you need for a productive day. Help your child have a successful school year by installing certain routines around your home.

Create a Bedtime Routine

Start by creating a bedtime routine that will allow your child to wake up well-rested and ready for the school day. Set a reasonable bedtime and then work backward from there. The last hour before your child gets into bed should be spent doing things that will help them relax to fall asleep faster. This means no screen time during these last hours. Instead, replace their tablet activities with others, such as reading or taking a warm bath.

Give Your Mornings Some Structure

Set up a morning routine to avoid having your child run around all morning trying to get things done before rushing out the door. Have a set wake-up they can follow daily. They may have trouble getting up on time at first, but their body will get used to it after a few days. Be sure they have plenty of time to get up, get ready, eat a healthy breakfast, and get out the door without rushing. A structured morning with minimal chaos can help them have a much more successful day in class.

Set Aside Some Homework Time

Once your child gets home from school, don't automatically sit them down and have them do their homework, unless this works for them, of course. Most students need a bit of downtime before they feel productive. Learn what works best for your children, such as a nap or some outdoor time. Don't forget to build a routine around it. It also helps to have your child make a list of their homework assignments before they get started to know what they have to get done each day.
